Bishkek

Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan with a population of about one million. Bishkek is located in the Chuy Valley. Under Soviet rule, the city then known as Pishpek, developed rapidly. In 1925, Pishpek became the capital of today’s Kyrgyzstan. A year later, Pishpek became Frunze, named after the revolutionary leader Mikhail Frunze, who was born there. The name can still be seen in the city’s airport code – FRU.

In 1991, the city was renamed once again, finally to Bishkek. bishkek is the stick used for churning milk for the traditional fermented drink, kumis.

Nowadays, Bishkek is one of the major cities of Central Asia, and is the largest city in Kyrgyzstan. The main language is Russian, but Kyrgyz and English are very common.
