Highlights of Bishkek

Ala-Too Square, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Ala-Too Square, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan. An ex soviet republic surrounded by Tajikistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kazakhstan to the north and China to the east. With a population of just over a million people, Bishkek has had several names. During the pre-Soviet area it was called Pishpek. It was on one of the silk road routes, a caravan stop-over for rest and food. In 1825 a mud fortress helped protect the city. However in 1860 it was destroyed by Tsarist Russia under the command of Colonel Zimmerman. In order to encourage Russian peasants to populate the area, they were allocated fertile land for their crops and animals.

Pishpek became Frunze in 1926. In honour of Mihail Frunze, a supporter of Lenin in the Russian Revolution. Frunze was his birth place. He was instrumental in helping Lenin in 1905, and again in 1917.

Kyrgyzstan gained its independence from the Soviet Republic in 1991. And with it the city of Frunze changed its name to Bishkek. In the post Soviet era, many Russians left the country. However you can still see much of the Soviet influence in its architecture. Though there may be some modern restaurants, generally second hand European and Japanese cars abound the streets, and many streets are in disrepair.

Many of the attractions in the area are its green spaces. The Ala-Archa Gorge is one such top tourist attraction. It is one hour’s drive from Bishkek. Closer to hand is Panfilov Park. It hosts amusement park rides including a big wheel. Or enjoy the hot springs at Issyk-Ata Gorge some 77 kms outside town.

For museums, the Museum of Fine Arts is on everybody’s list. Showcasing arts through history, you can see local Kyrgyz crafts, embroidery  and felt works. Then again you have works of arts that depict the culture, landscape and history of the region.  You can step back in time at the Mihail Frunze Museum. Built above his former home, his museum shows a lot of military memorabilia. The State History Museum also highlights the Soviet era, with little on show before that time period. However it is worth a look to understand the country’s more recent history.

You can also history in its statues within the city. Manas the Great is the local hero. Indeed the statue of Lenin was replaced by the monument of Manas the Great in centre square.

Due to its location close to China, Bishkek has survived from trade. At the Osh Bazar, you not only see it as a food market displaying a wide variety of ingredients, but you can also buy electrical appliances,  clothes and souvenirs at reasonable prices. Having said that the colour and display of food may blow your mind away.

The best way to explore Bishkek is with a Holiday Houseboy, your gay friendly tour guide. As a result of being local, he will be a source of knowledge about the city and its past. Its location as a meeting point between China and the Soviet makes it an interesting place to visit but you will see so much more with a local guide.
