Hyderabad is a city in the region of Telangana, central south India. Indeed With a population of 6.9 million in the city, and 9.7 million in the metropolitan area, Hyderabad is the sixth largest city in India.

The city was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. His reign started when he was 15 yrs old and reigned for a further 31 years. He was also responsible for the iconic Charminar monument. This monument has historic and religious significance in that the top of the building is a mosque. Nowadays it is the centre of Hyderabad. Not only is there a local market around the building but it is where they celebrate many official holidays. A true symbol of the city.

Geographically Hyderabad is located on hilly ground around artificial lakes. One of those lakes is the Hussain Sagar lake to the north of the centre. It is shaped like a heart. In the centre of this lake there is a rock called Gibraltar Rock. Erected in 1992, there now stands a statue of the Gautama Buddha, another icon of the city.

In 1691 the city was annexed by the Mughals, also known as the Nizam era. Followingthat, Asif Jah came to promenance and started the Asif Jah dynasty. This lasted until 1948. You can still see the influence of both dynasties today through the paintings, clotihing, Jeweleery and handicraft. Other areas include through literature and dialest.

So famous is the cuisine of Hyderabad it is listed as a creative city of gastronomy by UNESCO. In addition the film industry is important too. From 2012, it has the second largest producer of films after Mumbai’s Bollywood.
