Highlights of Ankara

Ankara is the capital of Turkey since 1923. This cosmopolitan city is in the centre of Turkey in the Anatolia region. As such it has many state related performing arts. For example it is home to the State opera and the State Ballet. In addition the Presidential Symphony Orchestra is here.

The most prominent feature of Ankara is Anltkabir, the hilltop mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk. A president famous for upgrading Turkey to its modern day self. Indeed it was Ataturk who declared Ankara as the new capital of Turkey. He is also famous for updating the script of the Turkish language into Roman script as opposed to the previous Arabic script. Thereby bringing Turkey more into line with Europe. They constructed the mausoleum in 1944.

For museums try the Anadolu Medeniyetleri Muzesi. It contains historic artefacts from early bronze age statues onwards. It is open every day of the week from 8.30 am to 7 pm. Its huge collection will not disappoint. Then there is a small fun museum called Rahmi M. Koc Muzesi. It is an industrial mseum showcasing the works of transport, industry and communication. From miniatures to full size objects, it shows how engineering has influenced our world today. Not only are the exhibits interesting but the setting and ambiance is delightful.

An unusual museum to visit is the Ulucanlar Prison Museum. It may help you bring your thoughts together and reflect on how some humans treat others. The cells are full of stories for you to discover. Poignant and moving. There is a small coffee shop too.

To compare past and present, a visit to the Hamamonu Restored Area may be a good idea. The area is full of traditional coffee style Turkish places amidst a more modern building. A good place for walking and dining.

Looking for a bit of peace and quiet, then head to Eymir Lake. Even though it is a property owned by Middle East Technical University (METU), you are allowed entry but no cars. A good place for a walk, jogging or cycling on a bike trail around the lake. The place to get some exercise and fresh air.

Similarly another green place to visit is Ahlatlibel Tesisleri Parki. There are cafes in this park too.

Albeit other attractions include Haci Bayram Mosque, Ankara Castle and Ankara Citadel to name a few.
