Highlights of Lagos
Lagos is the capital of Nigeria. With a population of 21 million people in a country of 19 million, it is also the largest city in Nigeria. Indeed Lagos has the largest population in Africa, and an ever increasing growing one at that. Noted for its vibrancy, Lagos has pristine beaches, buzzing nightlife and its trendy boutiques. It is also a financial centre with one of the largest ports on the African continent.
The top tourist attraction is the Lekki Conservation Centre. Walk along the Canopy Walk to get an impressive view of the park, climb into a tree house or drink coconut juice out of a fresh coconut at one of the many picnic sites around. Beware of the cute monkeys though. They use snatch and grab tactics then run away up into the safety of a tree. You can also see many exotic birds here. This safe place is popular with locals and tourists alike. Another respectable green area is LUFASI Nature Park with its giant tortoise.
Another popular place is Freedom Park. It comes with a lot of history. It used to be a prison, located on Lagos island. For example it housed the Late Chief Awolowo and his co-freedom fighters. Nowadays though it is a place of entertainment. There is live music on Fridays, and a food menu. The local pepper soup may get your tongues tingling. It is now the place to go to attend cultural and artistic events.
A trip to Lagos would not be complete without visiting one of its many beaches. Tarkwa Bay Beach is unspoilt and not over crowded. You can go on boat trips too. However for a true local experience try Elegushi Beach. The ocean waves are big and the currents strong.
The Synagogue Church Of all Nations is a cult like site where the ill and worried go to be relieved of their pains. It has a large following. Then there is the colonial Cathedral Church of Christ. Its exterior has an old worldly look but its interior is now modernized.
The top museum in Lagos is the Nike Museum For Art and Culture. It is free to enter to browse around and appreciate African art. You can also buy souvenirs here. To appreciate art in more of a gallery setting, then try the Red Door Art Gallery on Victoria Island. Whereas the Black History Museum exhibits memorabilia from the world of slavery.
