Highlights of Meknes
Bab Mansour at Sunset Time in Meknes Morocco
Meknes is in northern Morocco, some 119 kms east from Rabat and 244 kms from Casablanca. Sultan Moulay Ismail previously made Meknes his capital in the 17th Century. Famous for its imperial past the city has an enormous gate with mosaic tiling and arches called Bab Mansour. Its name comes from the architect El-Mansour. After its original construction, when asked by the Sultan if he could do better, the architect felt compelled to say yes. This infuriated the Sultan so much that he had El-Mansour executed. Needless to say the gate was finished in 1732, five years after the Sultan’s death. Still in good condition today, this gate leads to the former imperial capital. Nowadays it is part of an arts and crafts gallery with an entrance to the side of the gate.
The gate looks out on to Hedim Square. Not that inspiring but has some stalls selling pottery.
However the top tourist attraction of Meknes is the Medina. This small enclosed market area may have less shopping opportunities than other major medinas but it has a friendlier atmosphere. Set up more for locals than tourists.The vendors do not hassle as much so it is more relaxing and less stressful. Some good small restaurants to try here too. It gets busier in the evening.
Meknes also houses The Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail. A ruler known for his ruthlessness. Here there are many fountains and courtyards, which is typical of the Moroccan style. It has been closed for renovation.
To the south of the city lies Heri es-Souani. Now in ruins it was where they stored supplies for the imperial city. More or less a huge granary. It also had the Royal Stables here. An underground water system helped to keep the grain cool, and then opened up so the Sultan’s 10,000 cavalry horses could drink. Thereby serving two purposes.
Sahrij Swani is an artificial lake of about 4 hectares. It is this lake that guaranteed the supply of water to the town as well as to Heri es-Souani. The panoramic views from the lakeside are of the old town and the old stables. The place is popular with locals as they enjoy their evening walk.
For Moroccan architecture visit Bou Inania Madrasa. A madrasa is an islamic learning centre. Founded in 1341 by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Othman in 1341 it is a marvel of islamic architecture. It is hard to find though as its entrance is only by a small door with a small plaque above it. Besides the doors, columns and floors, you can also see detailed decorations on the ornaments. The building contains a place for ablutions, a prayer hall, classrooms and a large patio. Interestingly there is another madrasa with the exact same name in Fes.
Other places of interest include a visit to the neighbouring Holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Muslims go there for pilgrimage. Alternatively visit Chateau Roslane. It has its own winery with a restaurant.
