ÂHighlights of Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia. Of a total country population of around 2.7 million, 1.1 million of them live in Georgia. On the one hand you have the Caucasus mountain villages to the north, and the Black sea shore land to the west. Tbilisi is in central southern part of Georgia and famed for its Old Town with all the history that it carries.
Different ruling kingdoms have left their mark. However the golden era of Georgia was in the 12th and 13th century under King David the Builder and Queen Tamar the Great. Mongols, Ottomans and various Iranian dynasties followed. Then Russian ruled first through a variety of treaties then by force in 1922. Georgia then became one of the republics of the Soviet Union until its disintegration in 1991. For a better understanding of Georgia’s history check out the Georgian National Museum in Rustaveli Avenue.
The Old Town (Aldstadt) has that “quaint” feeling. Observe the red roofs and small turrets as though they came out of a fairy tale. Traditional houses, little cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, are all vying for your attention on its cobbled streets. A marvel of pastel colours, friendly locals and plenty of places to eat local food and drink local wine or beer. The region of Kakheti, east of Tbilisi, is famous for its vineyards and wine production.
Tbilisi has an aerial tramway. Perhaps the best way to see the famous Narikala Fortress. Passing over the architectural wonder of the Bridge of Peace on your way, you can get stunning views of the city below. Narikala Fortress was originally built in the 4th century as a citadel. It was expanded but in 1827 an earthquake caused its demolition. Now there are two walled sections with some botanic gardens at the back. A recently restored St. Nicholas church sits on the lower court, decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible and Georgia’s history.
As religion goes, Tbilisi is 80% Christian with the majority belonging to the Georgian Orthodox Church. A fun fact is that the country of Georgia was the second country in the world to adopt Christianity as its official state religion. The first was Armenia. Visit Tsminda Sameba Cathedral. It is the biggest church in Georgia. You can see its golden dome from many parts of Tbilisi city so is a good guide to use in order to orientate yourself.
One fun activity to do is to go to the Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theatre and see its show. Buy tickets in advance. The puppet show usually comes with English subtitles. Whilst their performance is only twice a day, you also have hourly entertainment with a small cuckoo clock. The cuckoo in the clock tower jumps off its nest on the hour to the delight of tourists and passerbys.
Some enjoy the Funicular which takes you to the top of Mtatsminda Park. Here there is a Ferris Wheel and amusement park. A communication tower, the highest point in the city, oversees the buildings below. A reasonably priced restaurant serves good meals but there are also places for snacks. On the ride down across the River Kura you can see the Tbilisi Holy Trinity Cathedral, especially beautiful at night.
A trip outside Tbilisi to see the 6th century Georgian Orthodox Jvari Monastery should be on your bucket list. Stunningly beautiful, you can also visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral dating from the 11th century nearby. The latter is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
