Darjeeling

Located 2 hours north of Siliguri is the famous city of Darjeeling. It is located in the Lesser Himalayas at an elevation of 2,000 metres. Obviously as the name suggests, it is well known for its tea plantations. In addition, it has incredible views of the world’s third-highest mountain, Kangchenjunga, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
In 1878, Franklin Prestage of the Eastern Bengal Railway, had a vision to build a rail link between the hills of Darjeeling and the plains. He pointed out how a railway could substantially reduce the cost of transporting tea and rice.
It is about 88 km and climbs from about 100 metres above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres at Darjeeling.
Six diesel locomotives handle most of the service, with daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum, which is India’s highest railway.
