Joao Pessoa

Joao Pessoa is the capital of the state of Paraiba in Brazil. Located at the most eastern point in the Americas, it goes by the name “the city where the sun rises first”. It is also famous for its pleasant climate, sandy beaches and its colourful baroque style architecture. In a survey in 2010, the population of Joao Pessoa was nearly 750,000.

A conglomerate of outstanding historical buildings make Joao Pessoa an interesting place to visit. Firstly you have the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Snows built in 1585. Another is San Antonio convent and San Francisco church. These are now named as the San Francisco Cultural Center, built in 1589 but only finished in 1788.

Parahyba do Norte as it was known then, was visited by Emperor Don Pedro II. Consequently the city received the title of “Imperial Provisional City”. A privilege only granted to those visited by the Emperor.

Other religious convents, monasteries and churches were built in the 17th and 18th century. Thereby consolidating Joao Pessoa as a religious entity in the region.

Apart from the religious and cultural respective, enjoy the beaches and the cuisine.

Influenced by the indigenous Africans and Portuguese, coastal dishes take advantage of the supply of fish such as lobsters, shrimps and crabs. Whereas sertaneja cuisine has the traditional Brazilian rice and black beans with a protein sauce such as beef or chicken.

City of Crafts

UNESCO designated Joao Pessoa as a city of crafts in 2017. With this the city has become a place to visit on Brazilian tourist maps.

Additionally one project to attract much attention was the Sirens of Penha project in which female artisan make jewellery and other crafts. In particular using fish scales on copper threads.
