Khartoum is the capital of Sudan. As such it is an economic centre and trading hub for the region. Rail links go to Port Sudan and El-Obeid.

Khartoum itself has a population of over 5 million. It constitutes of 3 main areas which are dictated by the geographical layout of the area. Firstly you have Khartoum itself. Then Khartoum North and Omdurman. It is here where the two Niles meet, known as al-Mogran (the Confluence”). The White Nile and the Blue Nile combine to make the Nile which heads northwards to Egypt. The White Nile originates from Lake Victoria whereas the White Nile flows west from Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Perhaps visit Tuti island where both meet.

The Sudan National Museum is one of the major things to do in Khartoum but check before going as it may be closed for renovations. Much better to go accompanied with a guide to explain things. For example one of the exhibits is actually mentioned in the Bible. Another museum perhaps of interest is the Ethnographic Museum. But plan accordingly as most museums are closed on Mondays.

If you enjoy art, then visit the Mojo Gallery. It comes highly recommended. Another is Sudan Art Diwan, which also has many Sudanese artifacts.

When it comes to shopping, you can always visit the malls. There is the Afra Mall, but you may also want to pop into the Al-Waha Mall. On teh contrary, if you wish to venture outdoors, then take a stroll along Nile Street with its parks. A good way to see outdoor Khartoum.

Albeit other buildings of note are the University of Khartoum, the Presidential Palace, Al-Rikini Mosque and Al-Kabir Mosque. All depending on your interests.
