One of the oldest and most beautiful temples in the city is Vat Xiengthong. King SetthathiRath, Lao’s first king built it in 1560. However the biggest temple is one of the most recent. King Visounnarath built Wat Visounnarath. Shaped like a water melon, this stupa draws in the believers and tourists alike.
Another impressive building is the Formal Royal Palace. It is the third generation of King Sisavangvong and dates back to the same period of French colonialism, 1904-1960.
If you wish to see natural scenery, then one of the best places to visit is the Peninsula. It is a most beautiful location with mountain surrounding, flanked by the joining of the Mekong and Nam khan rivers. Along both riversides there are many local restaurants and bars where you can relax, and sit and watch the world go by.
There are other beautiful areas to explore within about 30 kms. For example a popular tourist attraction is the Kuang Si Waterfall where you can go for a swim. Albeit other attractions include visiting an elephant conservation and a bear garden. Additionally you may prefer to watch the sunset on the Mekong sunset cruise.
