Highlights of Madagascar

Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean 400 kms off Mozambique in east Africa. In fact it is the fourth largest island in the world. It comprises of the main island plus some much smaller islands around it. The capital and largest city is Antananarivo. Previously named as the “Malagasy Republic”, Madagascar is an eco centre for a whole host of endemic species.

Its variety of animals, birds, reptiles and fauna is amazing. Probably one of the best examples of an ecosystem still surviving today. Its isolation has enabled its unique wildlife to survive. However this is not to say it is not threatened by today’s technological advances, global warming and pollution.

Whilst Madagascar is one of the least developed countries in the world, it depends on agriculture and tourism. For tourists the highlights are its pristine beaches and national parks. Some places such as the Avenue of the Baobab trees look even mystical.

To the north you have places such as Nosy Be Island, the Ankarana National Park and the Emerald sea. In addition there is Tsingy Rouge, a galactic-like red rock formation.

Venture east and you can enjoy the Andasibe National Park, the Palmarium National Park and Saint Marie Island amongst others. The port in the area is Tamatave Port. One of its characteristics is its old town. They were formerly Creole houses built on stilts.

Head south and you will find parks such as the Ranomafana Park, the Isalo National Park and the Anja Reserve.  Another park, the Zombitse Park, established in 1997 is split into three forested sections. A good place for bird watchers. For the beach lover there is the beautiful Ifaty Beach.

Finally on the western side, you can find the popular National Park Tsingy Bemaraha and the Kirindy Forest.

Besides taking in the natural beauty of Madagascar you can visit some landmarks. Ambohimanga, 23 kms from Antananarivo, is a former royal capital. It has stunning views over paddy fields. Or Fort Manda, the only surviving fort along the Madagascan coastline. Located near Tamatave, its canons are in an unusual good state of conservation. Then there is Antsirabe Cathedral, in the city of Antsirabe, south of the capital.

To truly make the most of Madagascar you will need a guide.
