Highlights of Manaus

Teatro Amazonas, Manaus

Teatro Amazonas, Manaus

Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas of Brazil. The Amazonas being the largest of the 27 states in Brazil with a size of over 1.5 million square kilometres. Comparable to the size of Mongolia. But 15th in size of population, with Sao Paulo first and Rio de Janeiro third. The city itself has a population of 1.79 million. The seventh largest city in Brazil.

Manaus has a strategic location, right next to the River Negro. Indeed its first name in 1669 was Fort of Sao Jose do Rio Negro. In 1832 its new name became Manaus after the indigenous Manos people who lived in the region. It raised to the status of city from town in 1848.

At the meeting place of the River Negro and the Solimoes River it then becomes the Amazon river. The longest river in the world ahead of the River Nile and the River Yangtze. Second and third respectively.

Right in the centre of the largest rainforest in the world, it hosts the National Institute of Amazonian Research. This being the most important centre for scientific studies in the region, specialising in sustainability issues.

Fortunately Manaus has an economic free zone with its Industrial Park of Manaus. Its privileged status has helped the economy with the trade of products such as chemical products, rubber, jute, nuts, rosewood oil and electronics. Along with the development of rubber production, came the Europeans. As a result of this, they brought their European culture and habits with them.

The top tourist attraction is the Teatro Amazonas. Principally used for opera concerts, it also hosts other artistic performances. It has a distinctive pink and white stone topped with a mosaic dome. This tiled dome is in the colours of the Brazilian flag.

Opposite the Teatro Amazonas, there is an open area with a statue known as Espaco Cultural Largo de Sao Sebastiao. It is also close to the Sao Sebastiao Church. This is a place in downtown Manus to have something to eat at one of the stalls or simply enjoy the hobby of people watching.

When it comes to museums, try the natural museum of Museu da Amazonia or the historic museum of Museu do Seringal Vila Paraiso. The latter being a museum explaining the history of rubber production. The truths and the myths. To get to it you need to go by boat from Marina do David. This is a treat in itself as you go past villages on the river banks.

In Manaus you are never far from nature. To explore more of this, visit Bosque da Ciencia, Ponta Negra Beach or the Arquipelago de Anavilhanas. In addition, and closer to hand, you have the Manaus Botanical Garden highlighting its endemic flora.

For shopping there is the Manauara Shopping Centre. A shopping mall with a food court. And the Amazonas Shopping Precinct which has many facilities in one place such as banks, travel agencies, shops and restaurants. However if it is reasonably priced souvenirs or crafts that you seek, then the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa may be your best option. Inspired by Les Halles in Paris, this 1800s building hosts a fish market, cafes and a crafts bazaar.

Regardless of where you want to go or what you want to do, go with a Holiday Houseboy. Your local gay friendly guide. He will look after you at all times.
