Sigiriya

Sigiriya

Sigiriya. Magma from an extinct volcano formed Sigiriya Rock . Furthermore it rises to  200 metres above the surrounding jungle offering impressive views. It is more or less in the centre of the island, in Central Province. Nearest towns are Habarana and Dambulla. Sigiriya itself is a small village that takes advantage of the tourist trade offering accommodation, dining experiences and the small manufacture of souvenirs. Such as wooden elephants and batik clothes.

In the 3rd century it was a monastery. However King Kasyapa decided in the 5th century to build his royal place there. Nowadays the fortress complex shows remnants of the old palace. It consists of an amazing array of ponds and canals, of gardens, fountains and alleys.

One feature that is a standout are the frescoes. They were painted on the western wall. Only 18 have survived today. But the most famous ones are shown everywhere in Sri Lanka from table mats to jigsaw puzzles. They depict the naked picture of several ladies from King Kashyapa’s concubine. Indeed it is said that he had a harem of 1000 ladies, but never bore any children. Men from the surrounding areas were not too happy as he took away all the beautiful women in the region.

After King Kashyapa’s death, the fortress reverted back to Buddhist monastery. This lasted until th3 14th century. Thereafter they abandoned the fortress rock.

At the northern side of the rock is the entrance. The original design was that of  a lion. Today only the feet remain. The upper parts of the lion body are no longer visible as they have been destroyed. It is thanks to this image of a lion that the palace was named Sigiriya. As a result the village takes this name also. It originates from the word “Sigahri” which means Lion Rock.

Another feature of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is the “Mirror Wall”. It was once polished so well that the King could see his reflection it in. It is painted with inscriptions and poems from long gone visitors. The most ancient inscriptions date back to the 8th century.

Note the surrounding area is truly jungle. There are wild elephants, jungle fowl and monkeys. You will the cacophony of monkeys as they shout to one another or land on the tin roofs of the local houses. You may think Sigiya is a quiet serene place. A place of reflection perhaps. The jungle noises may tell you something different.
