Highlights of Split

Split Harbour

Split Harbour

Split is a resort town off Croatia’s west coast, the Dalmatian Coast. Approximately 410 kms south of Croatia’s capital Zagreb. Being a resort town it is known for its beaches. In addition to this it has a rich history going back to Roman times. For in the 4th century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built a palace. This is Diocletian’s Palace. Its walls now encircle a complex of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. Consequently its large size occupies about half of the old town of Split. Along with 200 buildings now in ruins, the resort became a thriving small city in Roman times.

Marjan park is a top attraction. Located above the harbor, start off at Senska Street. Head to the Varos neighbourhood up a steep path to Vidilica. You will see some adorable ancient churches and hermits’ caves on the way.

Also visit the third largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. Once you have hiked towards the top you will have a magnificent view of the harbour below. Further on the other side of the park by Marjan tunnel you can hire bikes, ride through forests, stop for a bit of swimming and get some healthy exercise.

Of course walking along the Riva Harbour itself is a joy. A promenade that has the old Roman quarter on one side and souvenir shops on the other. Plenty of places to sit outside and people watch.

One place not to miss is the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. Originally it was an Imperial Roman mausoleum with a bell tower under the name of Saint Domnius. Alongside they built a catholic church dedicated to Virgin Mary. Together they form the Cathedral of St. Domnius. It holds a special place in history as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world still in use today to keep its original structure from AD 3.

Certainly Game of the Thrones fans would love to visit the mystical Klis Fortress. Used as a defence against the Ottoman Empire, the fortress is well preserved. Film series aside, the towering turrets, dramatic views and its ancient history all make up for an emotional visit. There is also a Game of Thrones museum in central Split with numerous articles and costumes from the series.

In addition for an oddity, you can visit Froggyland. A museum full of frogs doing every day human activities by a creative artist. Believe it may be closed though until its reopening due in January 2020. Or take the minibus from the old town to visit the Putalj winery and do some wine tasting.

Moreover the top 5 reasons for going to Split are apparently island hopping, all night parties, the coffee culture, you can dawdle around what remains of a Roman palace and of course hit the beach for some sun and fun.

But what better to discover Split than with a Holiday Houseboy, your local gay friendly tour guide. He will be able to point out any things you would not normally see on your own. A true enlightened exploration of the city.
